Bruno Mathsson

Bruno Mathsson 1907-1988 was one of the great pioneers of modern Swedish furniture design. He trained as a cabinet maker with his father Karl Mathsson in Värnamo and from 1933 mainly designed furniture for the family business.

In contrast to the strict geometric forms of the functionalist movement of the 1930's, Mathsson believed that furniture should be designed for how people sit naturally. He therefore designed his seating from an ergonomic perspective with its contours closely echoing the form of the human body, and often using hemp or jute webbing he did away with the need for bulky upholstery.
